If I Set Not Jerusalem

by Shani Zilka, Israel

In an ideal world

We would walk the autumn streets of Jerusalem.

Our lungs would inhale fresh mountain air

Our legs would bless holy land

Our smiles would meet without that bitter taste of pain

Our hearts would open ever so slightly again.

The mighty wind would force us to huge

You would giggle slightly and say something that would make me tear.

We would lay on the grass carelessly

Talk about philosophy, art and tea.

In an ideal world

You would be an artist and travel the world

And I would be an activist and move mountains with my words.

I would adore you muse, your mind, you body

You would love my eyes, my tears, my agony.

In an ideal world

Your mom would have accepted you

And love me like a daughter.

I would hold your hand under the Shabbat table

And cherish you like no other.

In an ideal world

You would be all the purity and grace, sacredness and mercy,

And for once

I would be worthy

Of you.

Silence would speak louder than words

Of all the times I failed to say the truth.

If I forget thee Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skills,

But please dear lover,

Do not forget me.

I cry to the stars tonight, would they carry my message to you

I love you until it tortures my voice to ask

So I would never know if you still do too.
